About the Program
Application Deadline:
Applications for 2022-2023 CHEX are currently given the coronavirus situation currently in the US and China.
• Please note that the BHS China Exchange Program only provides J1 visas for our sister school in Xi'an China.
The Brookline-Xi'an China Exchange Program annually brings a group of students and teacher from BHS to live and study for the spring semester at the Gao Xin No. 1 School in Xi'an, China. In turn, our sister school sends us a group of their students and teacher who stay with Brookline host families, integrating them into our mainstream classes and extracurricular activities at BHS during the fall semester. The CHEX program is unique in the length of stay (full semester) compared to many other school exchange programs. Students from both sides form lasting relationships with their families and the schools, and the CHEX program moves many of its participants to consider further study or work opportunities in China or the US. The CHEX Program completed its 20th year prior to the global pandemic.
All BHS students are welcome to apply. Students will be selected on the basis of the following criteria: strong academic records; interest in and aptitude for learning Chinese language, history and culture; ability to serve as ambassador from Brookline and the United States abroad; sensitivity to other people and cultures; interest and capacity in being a global leader; and successful completion of the application and interview. All are required to take an intensive Mandarin language course during the summer. The summer class will meet for two weeks, three hours per day. In the fall semester, participants will meet regularly with their Gao Xin #1 School peers and with the teacher, and they will continue to study Mandarin through Brookline High’s Chinese Language program.
We strongly encourage each participant’s family to be a host home for one of our Xi’an guests in the fall. The exchange program’s goal is to build friendship, not just between two high schools, but between two communities.
The selected students and teacher will leave for China on or around February 1, soon after their Xi’an friends have left Brookline to return home. They will live with host families in Xi’an, attend classes at Gao Xin, and explore 5000-year-old Xi’an, the most famous ancient capital city in China with its extraordinary Terra-cotta soldiers. Xi’an’s cultural heritage is especially rich because it was the terminal of China’s ancient “Silk Road,” which connected Europe and Asia for trade and cultural exchanges. Students will also travel to Beijing and other important sites in China.
